Today, 33% of the Baltic Sea’s seabed suffers from oxygen deficiency. The large extent of this oxygen depletion is mainly due to eutrophication caused by nutrients being carried from land to the sea. The countries around the Baltic Sea are working together to reduce eutrophication, and they have jointly succeeded in decreasing the nutrient emissions from land. However, it will take a long time before the seabed becomes oxygen-rich again. Recovery is made more difficult by the fact that the temperature of the sea is rising as the climate warms.
Can you think of anything we could do to help the sea with its oxygen shortage?
